Russell Foster
Russell Foster is Professor of Circadian Neuroscience, Head of Oxford’s Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology, the founder and Director of the Sleep and Circadian Research Institute and is a Fellow of Brasenose College Oxford. During his forty years of research, he has addressed how circadian rhythms and sleep are generated and regulated and what happens when these systems fail as a result of societal pressures, ageing and disease. For his work, Russell was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2008. Russell has also been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) in 2011 and the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) in 2013. He was honoured by being appointed as a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2015 for services to Science. In addition, Russell has received numerous national and international awards.
Russell is a keen communicator of science to the broader public and sees this as a fundamental duty of all scientists. He has served and assisted on numerous public organisations including the Royal Society and the Science Museum. His latest book, Life Time: The New Science of the Body Clock, and How It Can Revolutionize Your Sleep and Health was a Sunday Times bestseller and has been translated into 11 languages.
